The Hamsa, also known as the “five fingers” or the Hand of Fatima, is a symbol with universal significance found across cultures worldwide. In the realm of yoga, the Hamsa takes on deeper meaning, symbolizing the harmony of the Chakras and the sensory experiences. It stands as a quintessential emblem of yoga practice, with each finger on the Hamsa hand representing a specific chakra and element:

• Thumb: Solar plexus chakra; fire element

• Index finger: Heart chakra; air element

• Middle finger: Throat chakra; Ethereal (space) elements

• Ring finger: Root chakra; Earth element

• Pinky finger: Sacral chakra; water element

The Hamsa Hand, sometimes referred to as the evil eye, is believed to possess protective qualities, capable of warding off negative energies. It is commonly incorporated into jewelry and tapestries to invoke a sense of security and safeguarding.

Although yoga itself isn't inherently spiritual, many of its symbols hold significance across various cultures and spiritual traditions. The Hamsa Hand, known by different names such as Hamesh, Khamsa, or Chamsa, is a prime example of a symbol shared between yoga and numerous spiritual and religious practices.

In Buddhism and Hinduism, the Hamsa Hand is revered as the Hand of God, while in Judaism and Islam, it is known as the Hand of Miriam and the Hand of Fatima, respectively. The eye at the center of the Hamsa palm serves as a reminder to remain vigilant against evil forces.

When the Hamsa Hand is depicted with its fingertips facing downwards, it assumes the Varada Mudra, symbolizing goodness, fulfillment of prayers and wishes, and fertility. Conversely, when the fingertips point upwards (Abhaya Mudra), it signifies protection against evil and jealousy.
